McHenry County, IL – Back by popular demand, McHenry County Economic Development Corporation (MCEDC) is pleased to host its 6th  Manufacturing Matchmaking event on Thursday, June 12th, 2014 at the Holiday Inn Crystal Lake, 7:30-11:30 am. Over 300 companies have participated in this event in the past and we are pleased to provide our Manufacturing Industry Sector with this opportunity.

This ‘speed dating’ for manufacturers event provides attendees with an opportunity to meet with seven companies for preselected ten minute appointments.  Formal matches end at 10:30 AM and there is an additional opportunity for open matches and networking until 11:30 AM.

How it works...once registrations are finalized, a listing of all participating companies is sent to registrants. Companies review the list and select and rank their preferred matched (appointments) using a convenient online selection form.  Each registrant can select and rank up to ten preferred matches.  Upon arrival, attendees receive a detailed match schedule. During the matches, companies share product samples, brochures and discuss potential business opportunities.

Crystal Lake Robotics team goes to Spain

fruit-salad-robotics-teamFruit Salad, an all-girl robotics team, is traveling to Pamplona, Spain to participate in the FIRST Lego League Open European Championship. Fruit Salad is one of eight teams selected from over 14,000 to represent the United States and Canada in this global competition.

FIRST Lego League (FLL) is an international program for youths ages 8 to 14 that aims to increase interest in STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering and Math - as well as teach valuable employment and life skills.

Fruit Salad is comprised of six 8th grade girls from Crystal Lake. The team earned the First Place Champions' Award at a regional tournament in Harvard in December and advanced to the Northern Illinois state competition held in Arlington Heights in February where they took the Second Place Champions Award. As a result of their outstanding performance, Fruit Salad was invited to the FLL Open European Championship where they will compete in a field of 90 teams from 70 countries across the globe. The girls will be traveling to Spain for this competition, which takes place May 28–31.

Fruit Salad will be hosting several fundraisers to subsidize their trip. Join the girls for a meal at the following locations and help them get to Spain:

Your McHenry County Economic Development Corporation is again hoping to spark interest in manufacturing by bringing our high school students to the premier manufacturing technology show being held this September at McCormick Place.

This will be the 30th edition of the ILLINOIS MANUFACTURING & TECHNOLOGY SHOW (IMTS) with over 1,900 exhibiting companies, occupying 1,240,863 net square feet of exhibit space. IMTS is held every even-numbered year in Chicago and attracts more than 100,000 buyers and sellers from over 112 countries.

In 2012, thanks to our manufacturing partners, we were able to bring 844 McHenry County high school students via 15 coach buses to McCormick place to attend the show and participate in the student center opportunities.  This year, we already have had requests from local high schools and may need 20 to 25 buses.  Businesses, municipalities, organizations and individuals who wish to sponsor a bus should contact our office.

Here in McHenry County, the manufacturing sector is responsible for 25% of our economy. We are proactively working to address both the skills gap and the forecasted retirement impact in our workforce by engaging our youth. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) education is vital and we hope to show our young people some of the opportunities in advanced manufacturing and innovative technology, and how STEM education can lead to practical applications, good paying jobs, and careers.

In a recent report by the Illinois Chamber of Commerce, they noted that "Illinois is the largest exporting state in the Midwest and the fifth largest in the U.S." They commented further that "Exports represent the single fastest-growing segment of the Illinois economy."

"Midwest manufacturing activity has grown faster than the nation during the past few years" according to Kevin Kliesen, Business Econommist and Research Officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis.  According to a new study done by University of Illinois at Chicago Center for Urban Economic Development and reported by Crain's, our region saw manufacturing jobs growing faster than the United States overall during the last three years.

Chicago's Goose Island aea will be home to the new Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute. Announced this week, this lab is the result of a public-private partnership which includes 23 Universities and over 40 other companies, organizations and entitites. The Executive Director of the facility is Caralynn Nowinski.  The goal of the institute is to be a place for manufacturers to learn about the latest digital technoloigies.  Reserachers and entrepreneurs alike will be able to work out ideas, try new theories, products and hopefully grow businesses.   Director Nowinski emphasized in the Chicago Tribune article on February 24, 2014, that the goal is not to just do research, but "commercialize" so that new products are created as well as jobs.

McHenry County Economic Development (MCEDC) announced the 2013 Business Champion Award winners at the MCEDC Annual Dinner on November 5, 2013. Over 400 business leaders attended the event which culminates with the Business Champion Award presentations

For the past six years, MCEDC has recognized outstanding companies who have positively contributed to McHenry County’s economy and who have exhibited business acumen and vision. Judging is conducted by a panel of 9 independent and unbiased business leaders residing outside of McHenry County.  Pam Cumpata, President of MCEDC commented “ McHenry County is fortunate to have so many outstanding companies. There were 15 business champion finalists.” The 2013 Business Champions were presented their awards by Harry Kraemer, (Board Member of Sage Products, LLC, Executive Partner, Madison Dearborn Partners, Clinical Professor of Management and Strategy, Kellogg School of Management, Former Chairman and CEO of Baxter International) keynote speaker at the Annual Dinner and by Gary Overbay, MCEDC Chairman of the Board.

Phoenix Woodworking, Huntley was selected in Category 1 (less than 25 employees). Faced the many challenges of the recent recession, this company worked hard to keep everyone employed by reducing hours and using downtime to provide training and build on certifications. Sandra Pierce, President, accepted the award. Cumpata noted that Sandra not only has an outstanding company, but she is active leader in many organizations and a long time investor/member in MCEDC.

In the mid-size company category of 25 to 100 employees, Advanced Flexible Components, Lake in the Hills, is the 2013 Business Champion. This company is a family owned business who really believes in family. They have been in business in McHenry County for over 25 years, have had double digit growth and grown their businesses into a multi-site facility. Cumpata noted that not only were they a family owned company, but they believe in hiring family members – brothers, sisters, husband/wife, etc. and have found it to provide a stable work environment. Bill Lewis, President accepted the award with Vice President Dale Lewis cheering him on.

Watlow of Richmond is the winner in the category 100 to 299 employees. This company was nominated by an employee who began as a temp employee in 1993 and who wanted to recognize the tremendous employee support and training this company provides.   Cumpata commented that this company has a culture that recognizes the employees as team members and provides them with on-site education opportunities to help them develop and grow professionally. They have been a strong partner with MCEDC in its effort to help inspire young people to go into manufacturing as a career. Nathan Frost, Director of Operations accepted the award on behalf of the entire team.

In the category of over 300 employees, the judges had quite a challenge since all of the nominees were exceptional companies who bring value to McHenry County. Karl Schult, Engineering Manager accepted the award for Covidien of Crystal Lake. This company has invested over $17 million in capital over the last four years, developed an initiative which prevented over 6 million pounds of scrap from entering landfills, relocated a subsidiary from Texas to Crystal Lake, increased employment by approximately 100 jobs and developed a new intern program with a local high school. Pam Cumpata commented that Covidien is another strong partner in helping to encourage young people on the value of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education.

One-Stop-Shop Website to Educate Business Owners About the Affordable Care Act

The Obama Administration today launched Business.USA.gov/healthcare, a one-stop-shop which will provide employers of all sizes educational materials on how the Affordable Care Act may affect businesses and help them compete. The site includes a wizard tool that is tailored based on size and location, so businesses can learn how the law helps them provide affordable coverage options to their employees while still meeting their bottom line. The site will act as a user-friendly hub that connects employers to informational content on tax credits and other provisions of the law from the Small Business Administration, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), and the Treasury Department. As part of the Administration's ongoing dialogue with leaders of our nation's top businesses, this latest tool will help ensure that employers of all sizes know what the Affordable Care Act means for them, and have the information they need to take advantage of the new benefits and opportunities under the law. The Administration will work with the employer community to ensure the site continues to be a helpful resource for businesses and their employees, including updating the site with additional, timely information. Many parts of the Affordable Care Act, which was signed into law in March, 2010, are already in effect, including new consumer protections, and improvements to health care coverage that ensure consumers get more value for their premium dollars. Additional benefits will take effect in late 2013 and beyond. Starting October 1, 2013, individuals, including those who are self-employed, and small businesses looking for a better plan, will have a new way to shop for private health insurance through the Health Insurance Marketplace and the Small Business Health Options Program (SHOP) found at HealthCare.gov. Individuals may be eligible for lower costs on their monthly premiums and self-employed individuals and small businesses may be eligible for tax credits to help with the costs of coverage. The Institute for Supply Management (ISM) which is a purchasing managers trade group, reported that the manufacturing index rose to 55.7 in August which is up from 55.4 in July.  (A reading above 50 reflects growth.)  The 12 month average is 52.  Production was at its highest level in over 2 1/2 years.  

While there are some other reports that indicate a possible slowdown, ISM shows that its survey found broadbase growth with 15 out of 18 industries reporting expansion and only one contraction.  They also project an increase in factory production this year.
